From the Classroom to the Kitchen Table

Teaching reading isn’t just something I know— It’s something I live every day.

If you want your kids to love learning to read… (And you want to actually enjoy teaching it!) — you’re in the right place.

If teaching reading feels like a daily guessing game…

If you’re struggling to find the joy in homeschooling…

If you’ve ever agonized over which reading curriculum to choose…

Pour a cup of coffee (lots of creamer, please!) and make yourself at home.

You can find joy in teaching your child to read.

Because…

Reading is not a race.
Your child is not behind.

And every child needs something a little different, right?

When the Reading Expert Became the Mom in the Trenches

I’m Laura Leigh Vance—a fellow homeschool mom, co-op teacher, and reading specialist with a master’s degree in literacy.

After 15 years in the trenches of the classroom, I signed up for the best job I’ve ever had: homeschool mom. I had worked with hundreds of students and tested nearly every reading curriculum under the sun.

But my greatest teacher?
My daughter.

We’ve homeschooled from preschool through second grade, and while most people assume she picked up reading quickly (after all, her mom’s a reading teacher!)—she didn’t.

At age 7, she was still sounding out nearly every word. I knew the strategies. I had the training.
But living it as a mom? That changed everything.

Here’s what I know for sure:
You are the best teacher for your child.
And your home is the best place to learn.

At our house, it’s the space on the landing at the top of the stairs—sunlight streaming in, a good book in hand, and our dog snuggled up beside us as we practice reading.
